Understanding "Why" Erik Gradine, CSM, CSPO Program Manager Trimble What makes “why”the Most Powerful Word in the English Language? We all work on projects: from constructing buildings, to launching new products, to sustaining software releases. We almost always know "what" we are building. Most of the time we understand "how" we are building it. Yet we seldom have any concept of "why" we are building it. Understanding "why" will unlock the full potential of any project’s team! Join us as we discuss this powerful word and get some insight into unlocking its ability to unleash the full productivity of our project teams. About the Presenter Erik Gradine has worked for over 16 years at Trimble Navigation, holding roles as Software Engineer, Software Architect, Team Lead, and, now, Program Manager. He is a Certified SCRUM Master and Certified SCRUM Product Owner, along with training in Lean and TPS. He graduated from Oregon State University in 2000 with dual degrees in Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences. He is a father of twins, which has taught him, if he could survive twin toddlers, he could manage any project.

Questioning the Project Management Gospel Karl Olmstead, MA, Project Manager and Business Analyst Karl will be questioning some of the fundamental principles of project management. Such as the three sided triangle known as the Triple Constraint and other topics such as the definition of a project. Karl Olmstead had a 30-year career as a researcher, policy analyst, business analyst, project manager, portfolio manager, and IT manager for several state agencies in Minnesota and Oregon. He retired in 2017 and now spends much of his time outdoors: camping, hiking, and gardening. Karl is NOT a certified project management professional, but that doesn’t stop him from having opinions about PMI and its products. Karl holds a Master of Arts degree in Public Policy from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Economics from the University of Wisconsin.
